Last week I went to Kwale Eye Center on South Coast. It was begun 20 years ago by a British doctor, Helen Roberts, as a charitable foundation. I have attended as a patient for a couple of years now and that is the best way to know what services an institution provides. This is really a first rate facility and our patients on south coast are very fortunate to be able to go receive affordable specialist eye care. I met three eye doctors visiting from Britain and one specialized in the retina! The center has just obtained a camera that can take pictures of the retina and they can be used for comparison over time. This will be really beneficial to patients with diabetes which can damage the retina. The government is rolling out a new protocol to bring diabetes care down to the primary health care level and we will be working to use it in our dispensaries and refer patients for the eye care they need.
The campaigning for the elections continues and there are 8 people running for president but the top two are neck and neck with about 45% support each, according to the polls. There was a televised debate which was the first of its kind in East Africa. So Kenya has made an improvement and shown progress in comparison to other countries. However, today the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court announced that he has received death threats and other judges were threatened by a militia called Mungiki. There is tension and concern about potential violence but most people are still hopeful that peace will reign. However, it is looking like no one candidate will win on March 4th and there may need to be a run off election in April. I think most people would like to have the whole election process over and done with as soon as possible. The political scene is really helping us to have a challenging Lent!!!
